Obama Says “Shame” on Clinton, She’s Not “Annie Oakley!”
Obama Says “Shame” on clinton, She’s Not “Annie Oakley!”
After taking a beating for his “bitter-gate” comments about small-town America turning to “guns or religion” when bad times come, Barack Obama lashed out at his rival, Hillary Clinton, castigating her as “running around…talking like she’s Annie Oakley.”
His comments came after the firestorm of Obama’s controversial remarks over a week ago at a San Fransisco fundraiser where he said this:
“You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are going to regenerate and they have not.
“And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”
Clinton immediately jumped on the comments.
“I saw in the media it’s being reported that my opponent said that the people of Pennsylvania who faced hard times are bitter. Well, that’s not my experience,” Clinton told a Drexel University crowd in Philadelphia. “As I travel around Pennsylvania, I meet people who are resilient, who are optimistic, who are positive, who are rolling up their sleeves. They are working hard everyday for a better future, for themselves and their children. Pennsylvanians don’t need a president who looks down on them, they need a president who stands up for them, who fights for them, who works hard for your futures, your jobs, your families,” she said.
A McCain adviser, Steve Schmidt, called Obama’s remarks “remarkable” and “extremely revealing.”
“It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking,” Schmidt said. “It is hard to imagine someone running for president of the United States who is more out of touch with average Americans.”
Schmidt also said it shows Obama views the people he’s trying to relate to with “contempt.”
But instead of apologising, Obama tried to take the controversial remarks head-on, even reinforcing them Friday at a campaign stop in Indiana.
“And of course they’re bitter. Of course they’re frustrated,” Obama told supporters. “You would be too — in fact many of you are, because the same thing has happened here in Indiana. … Nobody is thinking about you.”
Clinton kept hitting hard at Obama for his remarks at virtuously every opportunity.
Both Democratic contenders addressed the Compassion Forum at Messiah College in Grantham, PA. In response to the first question, Clinton repeated her charge that Mr. Obama’s remarks were “elitist, out of touch and, frankly, patronizing.”
“We can’t afford for people to believe that the Democratic Party is elitist and out of touch,” Clinton said before the forum. “Honestly, how do we expect people to listen to us if we don’t hear them and we don’t respect their values and their way of life?”
“We had two very good men, and men of faith, run for president in 2000 and 2004. But large segments of the electorate concluded that they did not really understand or relate to, or frankly respect, their ways of life,” Clinton said, referring to Al Gore and John Kerry.
“Senator Obama has not owned up to what he said and taken accountability for it,” she said in front of reporters during an informal news conference at a different time. “What people are looking for is an explanation. What does he really believe? How does he see people here in this neighborhood, throughout Pennsylvania, Indiana, North Carolina, other places in our country? And I think that’s what people are looking for, some explanation, and he has simply not provided one.”
“You don’t have to think back too far to remember that good men running for president were viewed as being elitist and out of touch with the values and the lives of millions of Americans,” Clinton added, an obvious reference to defeated 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry.
“I think it’s very critical that the Democrats really focus in on this and make it clear that we are not (elitist). We are going to stand up and fight for all Americans,” Clinton said.
“She knows better. Shame on her. Shame on her,” Obama told a Steelton, PA. audience at a union hall.
Obama said that he expected criticism form Arizona Senator GOP nominee-in-waiting John McCain, but was “a little disappointed” to hear Clinton’s criticism of him.
“She is running around talking about how this is an insult to sportsmen, how she values the Second Amendment. She’s talking like she’s Annie Oakley,” Obama mocked.
Annie Oakley was a famed female sharpshooter immortalized in the musical “Annie Get Your Gun.”
“Hillary Clinton is out there like she’s on the duck blind every Sunday. She’s packing a six-shooter. Come on, she knows better. That’s some politics being played by Hillary Clinton,” he continued.
Clinton, campaigning in Scranton on Sunday, castigated Obama’s “bitter” remarks yet again as “elitist and divisive.”
But Obama wasn’t going to take Clinton’s remarks easily.
“I just have to remind people of the track record,” Obama said.
“This is the same person who took money from financial folks on Wall Street and then voted for bankruptcy bill that makes it harder for folks right here in Pennsylvania to get a fair shake. Who do you think is out of touch?” Obama asked.
“This is the same person who spent a decade with her husband campaigning for NAFTA, and now goes around saying she’s opposed to NAFTA,” Obama remarked.
But the Clinton campaign issued a quick response to Obama’s latest remarks.
“For months, Barack Obama and his campaign have relentlessly attacked Hillary Clinton’s character and integrity by using Republican talking points from the 1990s,” said Clinton spokesman Phil Singer. “The shame is his. Senator Clinton does know better - she knows better than to condescend and talk down to voters like Senator Obama did.”
As far as the Clintons’ are concerned, NewsBusters has some information about Bill’s past race-baiting techniques:
[For instance, the Los Angeles Times reported on September 17, 1991 (emphasis added, h/t Huffington Post):
In complaining that President Bush has been exploiting the race issue to divide the Democrats, Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, a probable presidential contender, said: "The reason (Bush's tactic) works so well now is that you have all these economically insecure white people who are scared to death."
As Clinton sees it, Bush has been telling worried white workers: You're right. I won't do anything for you. Government can't do anything for you. But at least I won't do anything to you.
In fact, if media did a little digging, they'd find this to be quite a common theme of Clinton's back then:
Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton, trying to convince Alabama Democrats to support his presidential bid, accused Republicans of trying to woo white voters by preying on unfounded racial fears.
Clinton told a meeting of the Alabama Democratic Party black caucus that Republicans "find the most economically insecure white folks and go scare the living daylights out of them." -- AP, October 13, 1991
Why does the President refuse to let a civil rights bill pass? Because he knows that the people he is dependent on for his electoral majority -- white working class men and women, mostly men, have had their incomes decline in the 1980s and they may return to their natural home, someone who offers them real economic opportunity. And so he is dredging up the same old tactic that the hard right has employed in my part of the country, in the South, since I was a child. When everything gets (hyped ?) and you think you're going to lose those people, you find the most economically insecure white people and you scare the living daylights out of them.-- Georgetown University, October 23, 1991
1,000 Illinois Democrats had gathered in Chicago for their annual fund-raising dinner. Clinton, 45, was determined to give them his best shot. And he did, vigorously attacking George Bush: ''You know, he wants to divide us over race. I'm from the South. I understand this,'' Clinton croaked. ''This quota deal they're gonna pull in the next election is the same old scam they've been pulling on us for decade after decade after decade. When their economic policies fail, when the country's coming apart rather than coming together, what do they do? They find the most economically insecure white men and scare the living daylights out of them.'' -- Sunday Times, November 3, 1991
"If you were in the do-nothing faction and you were about to get voted out, you just found the most economically insecure white people and scared the living hell out of them. We were raised on his. . . What did it do for us? Nothing. Kept us down. Kept us flat. All the progress we've made in the South, we've made since we started working together again.'' -- Houston Chronicle, June 7, 1992] - Noel Sheppard, NewsBusters
Meanwhile, Vice president Dick Cheney has put out a challenge to Hillary Clinton to join him in a shooting match to test whether her professed love of guns is genuine or not.
“To be frank, Hillary Clinton’s stories about her adventures with guns don’t exactly pass the smell test,” Cheney said on ABC’s ‘Meet the Press’ on Sunday.
“If she really wants to show that she knows how to handle a rifle, there’s an easy way to do that: meet me in the woods.”
But shortly after Cheney’s challenge, Clinton said she had “misspoke” concerning her gun experience as a child. “I fired a gun once, but I didn’t like it, and I didn’t recoil,” she said.
Cheney accidentally shot Texas attorney Harry Whittington, wounding him slightly in the face with a shotgun during a 2006 quail hunting trip.
As far as the other controversy surrounding Barack Obama, namely his ex-pastor, Jeremiah Wright, the reverend delivered a sermon at Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in which he castigated FOX News.
First reported by The Chicago Sun Times, Wright told mourners at the eulogy for a late congregant of Trinity United Church of Christ— former appellate judge R. Eugene Pincham, that Pincham’s faith “was not the jingoistic, chauvinistic ‘you’re either with us or against us’ demonizing kind of faith.”
“FOX News can’t understand that,” Wright remarked to cheers and applause. “[Bill] O’Reilly will never get that. Sean Hannity’s stupid fantasy will keep him forever stuck on stupid when it comes to comprehending how you can love a brother who does not believe what you believe. [Pincham’s] faith was a faith in a God who loved the whole world not just one country or one creed.”
Wright also said Pincham befriended “Jews, Muslims, rabbis, imams, fathers in the Catholic church and (Louis) Farrakhan in the Islamic faith.”

I think Obama does have disdain for working class white people, or maybe working class people of all colors. He often finds ways to blame others for his “clumsy” words, this man who is praised for his eloquence.
I used to think the two candidates, Obama and Clinton, were very close, and I was really undecided. I liked her healthcare policy more and so I chose her. But the more I hear him make remarks that “we” allegedly miscontrue, the more I think he can’t accept responsibility.
And what person who is 46 years old acts surprised and says he hasn’t made up his mind yet whether life begins at conception? I think most adults know what they think about that, one way or another. Every woman sure does.
I don’t support John McCain because he is too pro-war and he has lost my trust as a moderate as he accepts endorsements from anti-Catholic preachers. But he is right to criticize Obama for these remarks.

couldabeen,
Thank you for (what I consider to be) your honest and candid remarks.
As far as John McCain being “too pro-war” and being endorsed by “anti-Catholic preachers” is concerned, I think you may be conforted to know that John McCain (I believe) HATES WAR (he was a prisoner of war for five years) and is definitely NOT (in my opinion) anti-Catholic.
Concerning honesty, I believe both Hillary Clinton (more examples of Hillary’s problem with truth here) and Barack Obama are not to be trusted nor believed at any given time when they speak. They both have a long history of not being truthfull.
As far as when life begins, science (i.e. those biology scientists that are truly neutral about the subject) must not be one of Obama’s strong suits since biology 101 CONFIRMS that “life” can, and does, begin at ONLY one time - at the moment of conception. All other rhetoric is non-science-based positioning and reasoning and/or religious arguments of conscience.
Wikipedia - “Like every cell in the body, the zygote contains all of the genetic information unique to an individual, or a complete genome. Half of the genetic information residing in the zygote’s nucleus comes from the mother’s egg nucleus, and the other half from the nucleus of a single sperm. However, the mitochondrial genetic information of the zygote is in its totality contributed by the mother’s egg.”
“As I said, each human life begins at conception. This is a basic fact of human reproductive biology. Natural conception results from the union of parental gametes, but it may also be possible to achieve conception through various artificial cell manipulations. In either case, a human life is created. A zygote does not “become” a human being, it “is” a human being. (This would be true of zygotes produced by cloning as well as fertilization.) A human life is not a property (or a potential), it is a process. The beginning of that process is conception. — HWR” - from Abortion/Talk - Wikipedia
Wikipedia: Biological developement -
Development begins with fertilization, the process by which the male gamete, the sperm cell, and the female gamete, the oocyte, fuse to give rise to a diploid cell, the zygote. In pregnancy the 3 stages are commonly referred to as ZEF - meaning Zygote, Embryo, Fetus.
Week 2 (day 1-7 of fertilization)
Fertilization of the ovum to form a zygote. (day 1 of fert.[2])
The zygote undergoes mitotic cellular divisions, but does not increase in size. This mitosis is also known as cleavage. A hollow cavity forms marking the blastocyst stage. (day 1.5-3 of fert.[2])
The blastocyst contains only a thin rim of trophoblast cells and a clump of cells at one end known as the “embryonic pole” which include embryonic stem cells.
The blastocyst hatches from its protein shell (zona pellucida) and performs implantation onto the endometrial lining of the mother’s uterus. (day 5-6 of fert.[2])
If separation into identical twins occurs, 1/3 of the time it will happen before day 5.[3]
Week 3 (1 week from fertilization)
Trophoblast cells surrounding the embryonic cells proliferate and invade deeper into the uterine lining. They will eventually form the placenta and embryonic membranes. The blastocyst is fully implanted day 7-12 of fert. [2]
Formation of the yolk sac.
The embryonic cells flatten into a disk, two-cells thick.
If separation into identical twins occurs, 2/3 of the time it will happen between days 5 and 9. If it happens after day 9, there is a significant risk of the twins being conjoined.
Primitive streak develops. (day 13 of fert.[2])
Primary stem villi appear. (day 13 of fert.[2])
Week 4 (2 weeks from fertilization - first missed menstrual period)
A notochord forms in the center of the embryonic disk. (day 16 of fert.[2])
Gastrulation commences. (day 16of fert.[2])
A neural groove (future spinal cord) forms over the notochord with a brain bulge at one end. Neuromeres appear. (day 18 of fert.[2])
Somites, the divisions of the future vertebra, form. (day 20 of fert.[2])
Primitive heart tube is forming. Vasculature begins to develop in embryonic disc. (day 20 of fert.[2])
Week 5 (3 weeks from fertilization)
The embryo measures 4 mm (1/8 inch) in length and begins to curve into a C shape.
The heart bulges, further develops, and begins to beat in a regular rhythm. Septum primum appear. [2]
Branchial arches, grooves which will form structures of the face and neck, form.
The neural tube closes.
The ears begin to form as otic pits.
Arm buds and a tail are visible.
Pulmonary primordium, the first traits of the lung appear. [2]
Hepatic plate, the first traits of the liver appear. [2]
Buccopharyngeal membrane ruptures. This is the future mouth. [2]
Cystic diverticulum, which will become the gallbladder, and dorsal pancreatic bud, which will become the pancreas appear. [2]
Urorectal septum begins to form. Thus, the rectal and urinary passageways become separated. [2]
Anterior and posterior horns differentiate in the spinal cord [2]
Spleen appears. [2]
Ureteric buds appear. [2]
Embryo at 4 weeks after fertilization.[4]Week 6 (4th week of development)
The embryo measures 8 mm (1/4 inch) in length.
Lens pits and optic cups form the start of the developing eye.
Nasal pits form.
The brain divides into 5 vesicles, including the early telencephalon.
Leg buds form and hands form as flat paddles on the arms.
Rudimentary blood moves through primitive vessels connecting to the yolk sac and chorionic membranes.
Week 7 (5th week of development)
The embryo measures 13 mm (1/2 inch) in length.
Lungs begin to form.
The brain continues to develop.
Arms and legs have lengthened with foot and hand areas distinguishable.
The hands and feet have digits, but may still be webbed.
The gonadal ridge begins to be perceptible.
The lymphatic system begins to develop.
Week 8 (6th week of development)
The embryo measures 18 mm (3/4 inch) in length.
Nipples and hair follicles begin to form.
Location of the elbows and toes are visible.
Spontaneous limb movements may be detected by ultrasound.
All essential organs have at least begun formation.
Wikipedia - “Weeks 14 to 17 (12th to 15th week of development)
The fetus reaches a length of about 15 cm (6 inches).
A fine hair called lanugo develops on the head.
Fetal skin is almost transparent.
More muscle tissue and bones have developed, and the bones become harder.
The fetus makes active movements.
Sucking motions are made with the mouth.
Meconium is made in the intestinal tract.
The liver and pancreas produce fluid secretions.”
Wikipedia - “Week 20 (18th week of development)
The fetus reaches a length of 20 cm (8 inches).
Lanugo covers the entire body.
Eyebrows and eyelashes appear.
Nails appear on fingers and toes.
The fetus is more active with increased muscle development.
‘Quickening’ usually occurs (the mother can feel the fetus moving).
The fetal heartbeat can be heard with a stethoscope.”
From World Union of Deists:
“The key argument for proponents of this act is that a woman has a right to her own body. This is a true and correct statement. All people have a right to do to their own bodies what they will. However, the fetus, or unborn baby, is a distinct individual. Even though it resides inside its mother, it is a separate entity genetically. Its DNA is completely its own, and different from its mother’s DNA. From the moment of conception, it is an entirely separate genetic individual. Therefore, the argument in favor of abortion on demand, or abortion for convenience sake, that a woman has a right to do as she wishes to her own body, is not applicable to the question of abortion, since the mother’s body is different from that of her baby, or fetus.”
Here is the pro-abortion-on-demand mentality of how we should treat another human being before they are born.
Wikipedia - “Like every cell in the body, the zygote contains all of the genetic information unique to an individual, or a complete genome. “For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
“My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
“your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.”
-Psalms 139:13-16
Luke 1: 26 “And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.”
Matthew 2:1 “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.”]
BTW, if anyone thinks abortion-on-demand is a wonderful idea, then Barack Obama would be your candidate of choice, in my opinion.
